Terracotta Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Software AG and the award-winning provider of in-memory technologies for enterprise big data, today announced it is sponsoring an Industry Challenge course at UC Berkeley where students will use Terracotta software to create their own real-time big data applications for a chance to win a Terracotta-sponsored prize. Students will have access to Terracotta technologies including BigMemory, a leading-edge in-memory data management platform used by enterprises today to move up to hundreds of terabytes of high-value data from slow disk drives to machine memory, for blazingly fast, predictable access. They will also be able to incorporate messaging and real-time analytics software from the Software AG portfolio enabling organizations to discover hidden insights and act on them—instantly—reducing risk, automating business processes and rapidly deploying new products and services.
"Despite a number of highly successful big data solutions on the market, enterprises are just beginning to learn how to unlock the value of the vast amount of big data in their organizations," said Robin Gilthorpe, chief executive officer of Terracotta, Inc. "We realize that some of the industry’s greatest technologies often come from the academic world. By getting Terracotta’s in-memory data management and intelligence platforms into the hands of the world-class students and researchers at UC Berkeley, we can together accelerate the value created by harnessing and acting on big data."
"We are thrilled to provide our students with access to one of the most successful in-memory data management solutions on the market," said Ken Singer, Managing Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at UC Berkeley. "The hands-on knowledge that students will gain from working directly with these solutions will be invaluable, not only for their own personal development, but also to the big data community that will ultimately be served by innovations we develop together."
UC Berkeley’s Industry Challenge courses are uniquely designed to bring the world’s best technologies into the classroom. Every year, one cutting edge technology company is handpicked to pose an industry challenge to engineering students with the winning team receiving a large prize and an opportunity to create a startup based on their innovation.
