Operator CheckList
Description
This document is a checklist for operators of Terracotta to help with the deployment of Open Terracotta.
1. Capacity Planning
- Identify Number of concurrent application requests, writes/reads to clustered object graph (steady-state and peak).
- Size of clustered data (planning for disk-size)
2. Failure Analysis
- What is the application's target availability SLA ?
- What single points of Failure exist in the architecture without Terracotta ?
3. Terracotta Infrastructure Architecture:
Based on Capacity and Availability SLA, size to peak volumes.
- TerraCotta Servers
- Number of Terracotta Servers (1 Primary, or 1 Primary with 1/n Hot Stand-By(s)).
- Dedicated Terracotta Servers (and CPU/Memory/Disk Specs) or Co-locate Terracotta Servers with App-Servers.
- Choice of Disk Technology
- Sharing: None, SAN, NFS
- Disk RAID Levels
- Disk Size (Based on size of clustered-data, Distributed Garbage Collection settings)
- Network Hardening and/or TCP/IP Tuning (if needed)
4. Provision Environments
Incremental provisioning, if environments already exist. Typically:
- QA Environment
- Stage (and Stress) Environment
- Production Environment.
5. Monitoring and Production Processes
- Monitor Process and Host Availability (Client JVMs, Terracotta JVMs)
- Monitor Network Availability (between a Client JVM and active Terracotta Server)
- Monitor Exceptions in Application and Terracotta Server Log Files.
- Monitor CPU Utilization on Client and Terracotta Server.
- Monitor Terracotta Shared Disk utilization.
- Decide, implement suitable Log Rotation Policy and Archival.
- Lay out processes around upgrades.
- Lay out monitoring Tools/processes (Terracotta Admin Console, http://www.ntop.org
for Network Monitoring etc.).
